- About The Artist -
I have always had a passion for art even when I was very young. Sketching was my main hobby along with horseriding as I also had a passion for horses. At school art was my favourite lesson, my escape from the world and a chance to express my feelings and creativity. Although I loved art, I was also a little sheepish with experimenting. I would only ever use a pencil to sketch and would be afraid to try any other media as I was worried that the results would be disappointing. Towards the end of GCSE Art, my teacher introduced me to chalks and also began to teach me to sculpt as that is what she specialised in. From then on I experimented as much as I could. I made sculptures of horses out of clay, newplast and wire, getting very hands on with art and feeling exhilirated by it for the first time ever.
It wasnt until the beginning of my Art A-level course that I found I liked to paint. I had a keyword to work from and it sent me through a phase of oil pastel drawings in the style of a flamenco artist that I liked. I then found Simon Claridge and fell in love with the beauty of his works. From there it was a case of making it my own, finding ideas of my own that I was excited about. My first painting was a self portrait, I edited a photo of myself in photoshop, took the layers out, changed the colours and made it into something I wanted to paint. The results were a good start but I wanted to take this new found style and push it to the limit, to challenge my art...
I failed my A-level module 2. I was told that I hadnt progressed from my original idea, that i needed to work to an idea, not take an idea and work back. I had a mental block, once Id found my style I wanted to experiment with it, not move onto another style and change my ideas. I was very stubborn and disappointed that I couldnt paint what I wanted to paint. I dropped out of sixth form and didnt touch a paintbrush for what seemed like forever.
Finally I began sketching again, nothing special, just rough outlines and eventually I took my ideas to canvas and picked up a paintbrush, and the rest went on from there...
